What will you be doing when the world is coming to an end? Well, some might say that you should not be reading stuff on the web. Especially the poor justification by me as to why I produce this stuff.
Why do I do this? Because I find it interesting, and I like to learn new programming skills. Each of my webpages
has something new and exciting in it, demonstrating a new technology that I've learned. Of course, sometimes
these skills get passed by in favour of newer, shinier toys, but I did spend the time learning them. Of course, I also do this because it is slightly different to what I do at work, whilst still refecting useful skills I can transfer to the workplace.
Effectively, I guess, it's because I'm a geek. I hasten to qualify; I don`t wear synthetic fibre shirts, I don't wear
spectacles - although this puts me in a minority of one in my immediate circle of friends - and I don't do all-nighters
fuelled by coffee & adrenaline. Any more. I'm not a nerd,
I'm a geek - and there is a difference.
Designing web pages is a quick and easy fix for my creative output - I write, and it's there. I have other methods
of expressing myself but all of them take significantly longer to come to
fruition - not that that is a bad thing, but when I'm in the mood for expression, this is much quicker than baking
a cake, and it will last longer as well.
Some people might say that I`m very poor at this sort of thing. Well, they might be right. I couldn't care less.
Technologies I've picked up while writing sites:
At some point in the not-too-distant future I hope to have some experience in DNS management as well - as a direct result of
hosting websites - and I already have extensive network management skills as well. |
